How The Work Found Me

In the winter, many years ago, I was hiking the eastern coast of Koh Phagnan Island in the Gulf of Thailand. A spine of mountains rises sharply from the sea, creating an impassible barrier to roads that has kept the coastline pristine. My wish was to hike from cove to cove along this beautiful thirty-mile stretch of beach. Shortly after setting out, I was forced up into the jungle to bypass a large stretch of boulders and sea caves. The terrain was steep, and I had to fight for each step through the tangled forest. Eventually, I surpassed the headland and was scrambling back down to the beach. On a steep stretch I lost my footing, and fell off a small cliff, landing hard on the rocks below. I was badly bruised and had several deep cuts, but was able to make it to the beach, and followed the coastline north until I reached a small grouping of bungalows. I spent several days healing by the water – sunshine, papaya salad and brown rice is good medicine indeed! After regaining some strength, I began to explore the immediate area. On one of these excursions, I limped over the hills, and chanced upon Sw. Sidhamo Anand teaching the art of Ayurvedic Yoga Massage to a small group.
